History of Serve Park City
Serve Park City was founded in May 2024 by longtime Park City resident Karen C. Marriott, originally under the name Park City Humanitarians. What began as a small group seeking meaningful ways to serve the community quickly grew into a collaborative effort connecting volunteers with local nonprofit organizations. Early partnerships included Vicki Plumb, Park City’s JustServe representative, who encouraged nonprofits to post volunteer opportunities on JustServe.org.
During the spring and early summer of 2024, Park City Humanitarians hosted informal gatherings at local nonprofits to highlight service opportunities and build community connections. In June 2024, after attending a Wasatch Back JustServe meeting focused on the 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, Karen proposed a community-wide day of service for Park City. This idea became Serve Park City: Park City’s 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, organized by a newly formed Serve Park City Committee.
The first Serve Park City Day of Service took place on September 13, 2024, engaging approximately 900 volunteers across 30 service projects with more than 25 local nonprofits. The event’s logo—featuring the iconic McPolin White Barn—was designed by committee member Liz Craig Meyers, inspired by Karen’s memory of September 11, 2001, when Park City hung its first American flag on the barn in remembrance. Volunteer registration and project coordination were managed through JustServe.org/ServeParkCity.
Following the event’s success, Park City Humanitarians formalized an Advisory Board drawn from the organizing committee. Founding members included Karen Marriott; Jane Patten, former Executive Director of Peace House; Danny Glasser, former Executive Director of the National Ability Center; David Smart, retired Mattel executive; and Vicki Plumb.
Throughout 2025, the group continued meeting regularly at local nonprofits, highlighting volunteer impact and promoting service opportunities through a newly launched newsletter. The second annual Serve Park City Day of Service was held on September 14, 2025, engaging approximately 1,200 volunteers in 35 service projects across the community.
In fall 2025, the Advisory Board supported simplifying the organization’s name to Serve Park City, reflecting the belief that service should be practiced year-round. Serve Park City now meets quarterly, with each gathering including a hands-on service project. The organization distributes a quarterly volunteer newsletter, maintains an active Google Group for nonprofit outreach, and shares opportunities through serveparkcity.org. Community members may also stay connected by emailing serveparkcity@gmail.com.
Serve Park City was registered as a Utah business in December 2024 and is in the process of becoming a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization by Spring 2026, ensuring the long-term sustainability of Park City’s annual 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance.
